The main rivalry of this game series is between the Zaku I and the Zaku II. The Zaku I is the main mobile suit in the first game, and is piloted by the player character, while the Zaku II is the main mobile suit in the second game, and is piloted by Gai Murakumo.
The series is set in the year Universal Century 0079, at the beginning of the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The story's protagonist is the protagonist of the first two games, Rick Dias. Rick Dias is a young man from an Earth Federation Space Force base who, along with a companion named Sally, is assigned to escort a Zeon scientist named Dr. Gero to a space colony in space. Upon arriving in deep space, they are attacked by the Zanscare Empire, a rogue faction of Zeon that wants to destroy all of humanity.
