I don’t know if this is right or not. I can understand Shinji’s personality type better in the context of the anime/manga, but I don’t think there is too much consistency in my interpretation. But I couldn’t write about this without giving my own interpretation.
The main point is that Shinji has a consistent personality over the anime/manga. When he is doing something positive, he does it in a consistent way. When he is doing something negative, he does it in a consistent way. He doesn’t act like most people do in most cases, and this makes him so different than most people. For example, most people pretend to be nice when they feel like it.
