Despite the painful experience of his childhood, Orvon became a successful artist in his 50s and 60s. "I am very much a child of my environment," he said. "In my own life I've had to work for everything I have." His childhood was not easy. He was born in the small town of St. Gabriel, La., in a poor family that had moved there from Breaux Bridge. His father was a welder and his mother was a seamstress. He received little formal education, but he had an artistic gift. He was raised on a farm near Breaux Bridge and had a happy childhood.
"There was no abuse in my household," he said.
