When Peirce was working for the Patent Office, he met his wife Susan Ella Stebbins at a party. They married in 1886 and had four children. Peirce died in 1906 of kidney disease, possibly caused by the mercury used in his thermometer. Today, his home is a museum open to the public that includes many of his scientific instruments.
At age 25, Peirce moved to Washington, D.C., to work at the U.S. Patent Office. He was inspired by Benjamin Franklin's paper on lightning rods, which are used to protect buildings from lightning strikes. Peirce invented the first triode-type vacuum tube, which was used to send radio signals around the world. His work caught the attention of Thomas Edison, who hired Peirce as an engineer at his laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. He helped develop Edison's automatic telegraph, which was demonstrated at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
In 1898, Peirce moved with his family to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
