Surströmming personality type is INFP, so I’m sure I don’t have much in common with the Swedish stereotype. But I have one thing in common with the Swedes: I’m a doughnut addict.
The first time I tried Swedish delicacy was when I was in Stockholm in 2009. A friend recommended this place in the middle of the city, where you could get a Nordic doughnut for 5 SEK (approx 3 EUR / $3.5 USD). I was shocked at the price, but I went anyway. They were good, but nothing special. The next time I tried it, I got two for 5 SEK (approx 2.75 EUR / $2.5 USD), and they were pretty much the same thing. But when I got to Stockholm again last year, I decided to try something different, and while walking around the city I saw a place selling Swedish doughnuts for 1 SEK (approx 0.75 EUR / $0.7 USD). So I stopped in and bought one.
I wasn’t expecting much, because these were clearly not fresh, because they were way too salty and oily to be called “fresh” in my mind.
