The bagel and coffee on the table represented the first and second steps of the personality test, and after I took them, Uncle came out of the kitchen and sat on the couch with me. He had on a pair of black sweatpants and a black T-shirt. He had on a pair of Vans, and his feet were bare. He had once told me that he didn’t like to wear shoes because his feet were sensitive, and it made him kind of angry that I wouldn’t buy him a pair of socks.
I’d gotten so used to the way he smelled, the way his hair looked, the way his skin looked, and I couldn’t believe that I was going to have to learn to live without him.
