Sakuragi first met Monkey D. Luffy when they were traveling together through Fishman Island. He was impressed by Luffy's bravery and thought to himself: "If only I could be as strong as him." He eventually joined Luffy and his crew and they eventually settled down in Alabasta. However, their friendship was put to the test when Sakuragi helped Luffy and his crew battle the people of Alubarna. He was not seen again until he was among the first to join the Straw Hats at Water 7. He became friends with all of them, except for Usopp, which he found strange.
