Jhon Burgos, who has been dubbed “the last of the true Cuban rebels,” was born in Cuba, where he was able to carve out a niche for himself as a journalist and radio host who sees the world close up and experienced first-hand what life is like for the poor and disenfranchised. He writes about them, about the culture and about their struggles for dignity and respect. He has written a great deal about Cuba and its politics and, in particular, its system of social security. He has been a staunch supporter of the Cuban Revolution, both while it was in power and during the critical period following its demise.
I met Jhon at a conference in Havana in 1997, and we bonded immediately over our shared opposition to U.S. policy toward Cuba. We’ve been friends ever since. I’ve spoken at length with him about what he believes is happening in Cuba, how he feels about Fidel Castro’s legacy, and how he views the future of his country.
