Stefan Uroš III (Serbian Cyrillic: Стефан Урош III, known as Stefan Dečanski; c. 1276 – 11 November 1331), was the King of Serbia from 6 January 1322 to 8 September 1331. Dečanski was the son of King Stefan Milutin (d. 1321). He had a hard life. As a boy, he was a hostage at the court of Nogai Khan, since his father was a Tatar vassal. After Nigai's death, he returned to Serbia but his suspicious father ordered him to be blind and sent to Constantinople as a prisoner. Young Stefan had a vision in prison and St. Nicholas cured his eyes. After his father death, he defeated two other pretenders to the Serbian throne. He also defeated Bulgarians at Velbuzd 1330. Despite that victory unsatisfied nobility overthrew him the very next year in favor of his son Dusan. He was executed in prison. Stefan is known as Dečanski after the great Monastery of Visoki Dečani he built. Dečanski is seen as a noble character in epic poetry, and the Serbian Orthodox Church had him canonized.
