Stefan Uroš I (Serbian Cyrillic: Стефан Урош I; c. 1223 – May 1, 1277), was the King of Serbia from 1243 to 1276, succeeding his brother Stefan Vladislav. He was one of the most important rulers in Serbian history. He led successive foreign policy, brought in Saxon miners who were fleeing in front of the Tatars, improved mining and trade. He was married to Helen of Anjou, which helped him to keep tight connections with the West. The nobility, however, did not like his efforts of centralization, so they overthrew him in favor of his son Dragutin. Uroš died as a monk about 1280.
