General Mutation Theory:
John Lilly, who was an INFP/INFJ, and whom I admired profoundly, had a theory of human development that he called General Mutation Theory. He believed that individuals were born with a set number of basic genes (a genetic “recipe”) which were then modified by environmental influences (which he called “mutation”) to produce children who have unique characteristics. To him the uniqueness of a person was not so much the result of their genes or their environment, but rather the result of the unique combination of all the genes and all the influences.
He called this general combination of genetic and environmental influences “Mutation”. He believed that people could not only be born with different genetic templates (i.e., different recipes for life), but different sets of genes that caused them to think differently, behave differently and in turn influence their environments in different ways. He believed, for example, that individuals could be born with identical genetic blueprints, but with very different environmental experiences.
