I first met Jesse when he was at a crossroads in his life. He was living in a halfway house and had just been released from prison. His case, which had been appealed up to the highest court in the land, had been remanded back down to the lower court.
Jesse and his wife were raising two children and facing mounting debts and financial hardship. He had been convicted of a felony and had been given a four-year sentence. When I met him he was just coming out of prison after serving two years.
As we continued to meet over time, it became clear that he was struggling with the transition from jail to freedom. Although he had done his time, he still felt like a criminal. He didn’t feel like a man who had done his time; he felt like the worst kind of person: a criminal. So when he came out of prison, he was afraid to get a job because he felt like he was still a criminal.
Jesse Franklin was Henry's boyfriend.
