Richard C. Duncan, the author of the Olduvai theory, earned a bachelor of science from the University of Oregon in 1961, a master of science degree in electrical engineering in 1969, and a doctorate in systems engineering from the University of Washington in 1973 , where he devoted himself to teaching engineering from 1967 to 1973. In 1974 he began working with geologist Walter Youngquist. From 1975 to 1976 he worked with Dennis Meadows (co-author of the book Limits to Growth). He was Chief Engineer from 1985 to 1992 on the application of a Power Control System (SCADA) for the established Arabia Electric Company in Saudi Arabia (former member of Saudi Aramco)
Duncan published in 1989 a work called "The pulse-transitory theory of industrial civilization", which later, in 1996, he would rename as "The Olduvai Theory: to fall into a post-industrial age of the age of stone ", where he adopted the term" Olduvai Theory "inspired by the archaeological site called the Olduvai Gorge.
