Richard C. Duncan, the author of the Olduvai theory, earned a bachelor of science from the University of Oregon in 1961, a master of science degree in electrical engineering in 1969, and a doctorate in systems engineering from the University of Washington in 1973 , where he devoted himself to teaching engineering from 1967 to 1973. In 1974 he began working with geologist Walter Youngquist. From 1975 to 1976 he worked with Dennis Meadows (co-author of the book Limits to Growth).
