Plag personality type is ESTP, so I’m not sure if he’s thinking about his other family members, or whether he’s relating it to the “people in my back yard” (the other people he’s close to).
I have used this same theme before. I read a book by Maureen McCollough called “The Alchemy of the Mind”. In it, she describes how people who are drawn to her as clients are often drawn to her because she has been in a life-and-death situation but was able to find a way to survive. She relates this to “seeing the beauty in the chaos”. I think this may be what my dad is talking about.
I also think this may be a remnant of the way he was raised. He grew up in an Irish Catholic family, and his father was a very strict disciplinarian who did not allow any deviation from the rules. He was like that with his own children, but was perhaps more strict with the children of close friends. My brother and I have told this story many times: When we were growing up, we had to go to confession before going swimming in the lake behind our house.
