The other couple of times I've heard this quote, I've heard it attributed to "entirely different personalities". Apparently, some people have a hard time remembering who is a real person and who is an artificial construct.
I think this is a case of "exaggerate for effect" rather than "kidnap for inspiration". If I saw a butterfly in my garden and I think it's a new species, I'll write up an article about it and send it off to a big-name journal or two. If I saw a really strange animal in my garden, I'd probably think it was a new species too, but I wouldn't actually go out and try to get funding to study it.
I think the quote is also kind of funny because if you read it out loud, it sounds like someone saying "I've stolen this idea from this guy on the street" which is kind of funny. (It's also weird because the idea would only be original to the person who thought of it.
