He was a romantic and passionate man, who ended up dying of a heart attack, leaving Inga to become a political activist and put on a show for the Swedish Royal Family.
The two of them had a very passionate and dramatic relationship, and I think that Hartman and Inga (and by extension, Hartman and Homer) were able to capture the raw sexual tension and drama of the relationship.
