Xu Fugui personality type is ESFP, but he has an ISTJ mother. After his mother's death, he went to live with his father and aunt in the countryside. He was a very quiet child. His dad would arrange matches for him to play chess against other local boys, and he would often lose. He did not really like to play at all, preferring to read books instead. However, he was good at it, and quickly became a winning player. The other kids liked Xu Fugui because he was always polite and good natured. After the Cultural Revolution ended, the people of the village remembered Xu Fugui and he was easily elected as the Party Committee Secretary. He married Liu Yaqian (刘耀千), who was also a member of the same chess club. He had one daughter, Liu Xiaoliu (刘小璐).
Xu Fugui started to travel around from county to county and university to university, promoting chess. He wrote plays for local children, wrote articles for newspapers, and wrote books about chess. He founded several chess organizations for children, and eventually became an editor in chief of the Chinese Chess Association's magazine.
