Mandrake is an alchemical symbol of the mineral in which the herb is found. They are associated with the element of earth and the planet Venus, and usually described in European legends as a sorceress and seductress, but also as a despoiler who steals beauty and youth. In French her name is Mandragore, in Italian she is Mandragola.

The word mandrake derives from the Greek manteia, meaning "magic". In the original myths, it was a plant that grew near the tombs of the dead, and the name is probably derived from this association. The plant was also associated with the goddess Mên or Ceres, who was the protector of orchards, grainfields, and herbs. In addition to this, the mandrake was considered to be a symbol of love and fertility. It was said that as a child was born under a mandrake, so would he be "a man of knowledge" and gifted with prophetic powers.
