The main character experiences a series of revelations that he can see things that other people cannot see. In many ways, the film's plot resembles that of a Jungian archetypal hero's journey. In the conclusion of the film, the main character sacrifices himself to save the life of the girl he loves, in a similar fashion to the hero's journey archetype.
In this movie, the protagonist's ESP experiences are a result of his past trauma. He is traumatized in a car accident in which he is in a coma for a long time and was a paraplegic for a while. When he wakes up he is able to see the reality hidden by the people around him. His power of ESP is also linked to his talent of painting and photography, which is shown when he is able to create realistic photographs of what he sees.
In Rush (2013), the main character (played by James Hunt) develops ESP after his car is involved in a serious accident and he is paralyzed from the waist down. However, it's not clear why he developed this power after his accident.
