Kang Buk-gu was born November 4, 1892 in Gyeongju, Korea. He died December 28, 1954 in Seoul, Korea.
Kang Buk-gu’s father, Jang Jin (1856-1913), was a Confucian scholar, professor at the Gyeongju Academy and director of the Gyeongju Confucian Society. His mother, Bae Gyu-Sun (1860-1921), was a daughter of a Confucian scholar and professor at the Gyeongju Academy. He had a younger sister, Jang Jin-Ja (1894-1974), who married a professor of law at the Seoul National University.
Kang Buk-gu served as a professor of Korean literature at the Gyeongju National University (Gyeongju College) and the Seoul National University in 1919-1921. He later also served as a professor of Korean literature at Seoul National University (1923-1930).
