Jung described the story of the archetypal hero as follows:
The unconscious mind of the individual is made up of two components. One is the personal unconscious which is only partially conscious; it contains all that is repressed. The other is the collective unconscious which is made up of the products of evolution and is therefore relatively conscious. It embraces all that is valuable in the human race, the inborn laws and reactions, the moral standards and social institutions. The conscious mind, on the other hand, is made up of only two functions, thinking and feeling. These two parts are in a constant state of conflict, because they are as different as day and night, ice and fire. When one function dominates the other, we call it introversion; when both functions are equally strong, we call it extraversion. The extraverted feeling type is dominant in thinking situations and the introverted thinking type in extraverted feeling situations. These two basic types are symbolized by the two brothers, Cain and Abel. (Jung 1939)
