Peter is portrayed as the antagonist in this story. He is rude and arrogant. He claims that Ingrid's paintings are not as good as his own and he has no intention of selling one of her pieces. Julian does not believe him and declares that he will buy one of Ingrid's pieces.

The paintings have a strong sense of symbolism. For example, in one of her paintings, there is a chair with a man sitting on it. It looks like a chair but it is really just a symbol of what this painting represents. The man is suffering from a disease that causes him to feel pain every time he moves.
