Freddie was born in Brighton in Sussex in 1921. His parents were a showgirl and a doctor. The family moved to Paris in 1925.

Freddie was an exceptional pianist but playing the piano did not feed his insatiable appetite for music. In his early teens he became a professional jazz musician.

In 1947, he was invited to join the BBC’s dance orchestra, and was given the nickname of “the Nightingale of Swing”.

When he broke his leg dancing at the Café de Paris in Paris, he was taken to the local hospital, where he was treated by a trainee doctor called Graziella Panizza. The two fell in love and married in 1949.

Freddie died on July 25, 1976 in London at the age of 51 from heart failure.

Freddie’s death was announced by his wife Graziella at a party that she was throwing for him. The following day, many newspapers published the news of his death with photographs of him and a story about his life.
