Although I know I’m being silly, I have to ask: if the code was ‘G’, you would have got the auxiliary function – then what’s wrong with the code that it’s an ‘S’? Could it be that the extra consonant at the end of an ‘S’ makes it sound more like a ‘G’? Extra consonants are always contentious things, because they have all sorts of effects on the final sound. I remember, when I was young, that it was quite a big deal to have a ‘T’ at the end of your name. That was a very ‘important letter’ – people would say ‘I didn’t know you had a ‘T’ in your name’. But, of course, I do – there’s one in every name!
