The first time I met her was in 2011, I was interviewing her for the “Mightiest of the Mightiest” book about the world’s greatest cities. Her answers were very pregnant with meaning. She spoke of the need for her city to be a place of healing and compassion, not just a place where people could go shopping and party. The city needed to be a place of peace, where people could feel safe so they could come together.
I have not met Cihy since then, but I have read her books. They are all about creating communities where people can feel safe, loved, and happy.
When I interviewed her for this article, she used her favorite metaphor, saying that she believes that cities are made up of “cells”, and that the cells are the people that inhabit them. She believes that cities are alive, and that they need to be cared for. She believes that humans need to be treated with compassion and respect to thrive.
She wants cities to be places where people grow, where they can find happiness, where they can find peace.
