In the middle of the play, Amleth is captured by the Danes and brought before King Hrothgar. Hrothgar learns of Amleth's identity and is initially reluctant to believe it, but is convinced by Amleth himself in his role play as the deceiver of kings. King Hrothgar throws a feast in celebration of Amleth's deception and his apparent recovery from madness. However, at the feast, the characters are introduced to an old man who claims he is the real Amleth, and he reveals the truth about himself. He kills the fake Amleth, and receives great praise for his role play as a deceiver of kings. He then dies, which is seen as appropriate, as he was leading a double life.
Later in the play, King Hrothgar attempts to have Amleth killed, but is persuaded otherwise by Æschere and Hermod. This is because the audience knows that Amleth has been pretending to be mad throughout the play, and they therefore expect him to be killed.
