Hutchins' life and work were influenced by his upbringing in a religious community, his work as a social reformer, and his experiences as a lawyer and judge. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1843. During his time at Dartmouth, he studied under the instructor Gurdon Buckminster Fuller. Hutchins was the second person ever to receive a law degree from Dartmouth. After graduation, he practiced law for several years. While at Dartmouth, Hutchins became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and later became an honorary member of Phi Delta Theta.

In 1847, he published "Christianity Not Mysterious", which offered a Christianized version of Pantheism. It was based on ideas that he had written in his 1841 pamphlet "Slave Morality". Although the work did not achieve immediate success, it was influential among many Unitarians. Hutchins also wrote "A Defence of Slavery", published in 1849. He subsequently gave up practicing law to focus on his religious and social reform activities.
