In the anime, Yūma is a former classmate of Ryuji Sakamoto. When they were in high school, they were close friends, but after they went to different universities, they lost contact. Yūma was a talented tennis player, but his father refused to support his passion for the sport. After Yūma lost his mother, his father - who wanted him to become a doctor - became more demanding of him. Yūma's mother was a part of a tennis club that his father was not particularly fond of. Yūma developed abilities beyond his years as a result of this, which included the ability to sense the emotions and feelings of other people. Because of his unusual abilities, Yūma was not accepted by people around him, and started to isolate himself from the world. Shortly after he entered college, Yūma met Ryuji again.
