Mathew’s foray into science and math began in first grade when he was awarded a Lego Mindstorms kit. In middle school, he built a robot that won a robot-building competition, which led to his interest in robots.
During high school, Mathew participated in a robotics club. He said the club helped him develop his ideas of how robots should be designed, even though he did not program them.
“We had to design them on paper and then build them,” he said. “It taught me how to conceptualize things.”
When Mathew attended college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he continued to take courses in robotics and computer programming, including courses in artificial intelligence. He also started to build robots using Lego Mindstorms kits.
His first robot was a robot that could shoot basketballs when it was a high school student.
