Dawn was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA, on December 21, 1973. A child prodigy and honors student, Dawn began performing at a very young age. She has been described as "the most highly educated person to come out of Detroit". Her brothers have also been noted for their musical abilities, with her brother Timmy being in the hip-hop group Brand Nubian.
Dawn was discovered by Jermaine Dupri's So So Def recording label at the age of 15, after Dupri heard her singing "Keep On Keepin' On" on the street in front of her childhood home. Dupri signed her to his So So Def Recordings label and subsequently released her debut album "The Dissin' Continues" in 1994. Her second album "Dawn" was released in 1995, and became her best-selling album, selling over a million copies.
Dawn has been involved in a number of high-profile relationships. Her first relationship was with actor Martin Lawrence. Their relationship ended after she discovered that he was cheating on her with Mariah Carey.
