The researchers have suggested that this might be due to the fact that the INFP personality type is considered by many to be more “psychotic” than the ESFJ personality type.
“People with psychotic personalities are more likely to act out in a variety of ways, including self-harm, drug and alcohol abuse, reckless driving, and other forms of antisocial behavior. We suspect that these behaviors may be particularly salient for parents, who may avoid their INFP children due to concerns about their behavior,” said Dr. O’Connor.
The study found that when it came to parenting styles, the ESFJ parents were more likely to be strict and authoritarian, whereas the INFP parents were more likely to be permissive and warm.
“It’s possible that this difference in parenting style is a result of the different personality types, which would make sense given that being strict and authoritarian is an ideal parenting style for an ESFJ parent and being permissive and warm is an ideal parenting style for an INFP parent,” said Dr. O’Connor.
