Gwen Verdon (born October 20, 1937) is an American actress and dancer who was one of the first black performers to go into vaudeville and television. She was a member of the original company of the New York City Center Theater and appeared on Broadway in West Side Story, Fancy Free, and The Pajama Game.
Verdon began her career as a dancer in the 1950s and was hired by the New York City Center Theater Company in 1960. She was first seen on Broadway in West Side Story, then Fancy Free (1961), both starring Sammy Davis, Jr. Soon after, she appeared in the film version of West Side Story with Debbie Reynolds, who played Maria. She also had a recurring role on the television series The Mod Squad as Det. Carmen Basilio's partner, Sylvia Costas, who was also portrayed by Dina Merrill on the show.
In 1962, she was cast as a replacement for Mabel King in The Pajama Game, replacing the actress who had played Sister Mary Roberta before her. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in this show.

She won four Tony Awards for her musical comedy performances, and served as an uncredited choreographer's assistant and specialty dance coach for theater and film. Verdon was a critically acclaimed performer on Broadway in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, having originated many roles in musicals, including the title character in Sweet Charity and Roxie Hart in Chicago. She is also strongly identified with her second husband, director-choreographer Bob Fosse, remembered as the dancer-collaborator-muse for whom he choreographed much of his work and as the guardian of his legacy after his death.
