In the film The Matrix, "Neo" (Keanu Reeves) is a hacker who is revealed to be the reincarnation of a former warrior who had been sent to monitor humanity and guide it towards a brighter future. It is revealed that the warrior had been a woman named "The One", which is the name by which she was known by the ancient Mayan civilization. She died trying to stop the machines in order to lead humanity out of their enslavement by the machines, but she did so while still believing that they were not evil. In her words, "They are not machines, they are alive: we are all one". She is later revealed to be Venus, and we learn that the choice of a machine to become the One was a deliberate choice on the part of the creator of the Matrix, as he intended for humanity to have knowledge and technology that would be used against them by their overlords.
