Horstmann was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. He is the son of Dr. David Horstmann and Shirley Horstmann. He has a brother, Tim, and a sister, Melissa. He graduated from Harvard University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. He studied abroad in Florence, Italy. He later attended the University of Minnesota Law School to obtain his Juris Doctorate degree in 2003.
Horstmann began his career as a staff writer for "Grassroots Sports Communication", and has been a sports reporter and editor for Minnesota media organizations including "The Star Tribune" and NBC affiliate KARE 11 News. He started working as a reporter for ESPN in 2007. He covered the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for ESPN from August 2007 through January 2008. He was one of the primary anchors for ESPN's coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which aired on the network from February 12 to March 29, 2010.
Since October 2009, Horstmann has co-anchored FSN's "SportsCenter" and "ESPN First Take".
