    Who was Eddie Lane?

In the story of The Wrath of Khan, Eddie was a young man who worked on the Enterprise as a yeoman. He was a friend of Kirk's and also a friend of Scotty's. Lane was a different character from the one we know, being a far more emotional guy who was usually seen as a goofball. During this episode, he has a chance encounter with a woman who turns out to be his soul mate. She tells him that his soul is a black hole and he has to find a way to let go of her to be with her forever. Now that sounds kind of like an INFP thing to do, doesn't it?

    Why was Eddie Lane important?

Eddie Lane's story is a powerful meditation on the idea of soul mates and the concept of "finding your true self". In the end, as we've seen in many other stories, Kirk and Scotty save the day and Eddie gets with his true love. But Eddie gets with his true love only because he's willing to leave her for her. Kirk and Scotty stay together because they don't want to let go of each other.

Esmond James Lane was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the VFL during the 1950s. Lane was a 168 cm rover and handy goalkicker. His best season came in 1954 when he won the South Melbourne Best and Fairest award and finished equal 3rd in the Brownlow Medal. He topped the club's goal kicking in both 1954 and 1955.
