In the early 1970s, one of the first studies to use the MBTI to describe personality types was conducted by Isabel Myers, a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. She created a four-letter code system for each of the 16 Myers-Briggs type codes that she was aware of at the time. The code numbers were then assigned to each person in the study based on their responses. In order to compare the different types across cultures, Myers added four extra letters to her code system that represented cultural/ethnic identities. These letters were added in addition to the 16 letters used in the MBTI system (there are three letters in each type code), and each letter was assigned to a particular type, with each letter reflecting a different culture.
Myers’s work was based on Jung’s work on the psychological types in the 1930s. The MBTI was created in the 1940s and 1950s, and it is based on Jung’s work and Myers’s research.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is part of what is called the “Human Potential Movement.
