Pitillo Montalvan was the coach that took the Cincinnati Cyclones to the ECHL play-offs in the 2005-2006 season. He also coached the Cyclones to the ECHL finals in the 2006-2007 season. He resigned as the Cyclones head coach in February, 2007, during the ECHL playoffs when he accepted a Head Coaching position with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
In January, 2008, Pitillo Montalvan resigned as head coach of the Columbus Cottonmouths to accept a position as an assistant coach within the N.Y. Islanders organization in the National Hockey League. He was hired as an assistant coach with the Islanders to work alongside head coach Scott Gordon. In his first season with the Islanders, Pitillo Montalvan had a minor role in coaching the team's AHL affiliate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, but he was then promoted to Assistant Coach for the New York Islanders for the 2009-2010 NHL season.
