His first book was rejected by 13 publishers and he was invited to read his work to an audience at the New York Academy of Sciences, where it was met with less enthusiasm. The same is true for a second book. His third book was received well by reviewers, but then rejected by publisher after publisher.
Czolgosz, who was working at a time when the average writer made about $12 a week, could not afford to keep trying to sell his books. In addition, he had been warned that he had become a distraction and would only be more of a liability than an asset to society.
He decided to try to get his work published by threatening people with a gun.
Leon Czolgosz was an American steelworker and anarchist known for the assassination of President William McKinley, whom he shot on September 6, 1901, in Buffalo, New York.
