Tengu
In the Kojiki, the Tengu (or Kami-musubi) are a type of kami that is described as having the ability to shapeshift at will. Like the yōkai, they are also described as having a great deal of magical power, which is why they are feared by humans and often depicted as mischievous. The Tengu are also associated with the god of literature, the god of music, and the god of the mountain, so they can be considered to be the kami of learning, music and mountains.
Because of their reputation for mischief, the Tengu have been depicted as black birds with beaks of gold and feathers of silver, or as black birds with crooked beaks and feathers tipped with red. By the Edo period, their image had changed to a more bird-like form; this form was modeled after the Tengu of Shikoku, which was a Tengu with a long nose and a long tail. They are also known as Nekomata in Japanese folklore.
