We’ve been together for 19 years. I’ve known him for about four years before we met in person. We met on a dating site, although I think it was actually a scam, but I didn’t realize it at the time. I don’t believe he was using it for that purpose, but he was using it to get around his living situation.
He was in the military, and he was stationed over in Iraq. His unit was replaced while they were there, and he didn’t know where he was going next. He found this dating site, and he started contacting women on it. We were the first couple that he contacted, and we got along very well right away. I thought he was a good guy, and he seemed sincere enough, so I went up to visit him over there. We ended up having a lot of the same interests and values in life. He made it very clear right off the bat that he didn’t want me to come to Iraq just to visit him.
