The Kamui and Akatsuki pairing was first introduced as a real relationship in December of 2013, as an April Fools' Day joke. Both Kamui and Akatsuki are based off of their respective fursonas, and were considered canon by their creator, as they often appeared together in fanworks.
In May of 2017, Kamui and Akatsuki were finally brought together as a canon relationship on the wiki, and the fandom was not surprised at all at this development. The pairing had been on the rise for a while, and so it made sense to introduce the two.
