Ramesses II (also known as Ramesses the Great) was a king of ancient Egypt who ruled from 1279 BC to 1213 BC. He was a member of the New Kingdom, and is considered to be one of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs.
Ramesses II was the son of Seti I, and the grandson of Ramesses I. He began his rule as co-regent with his father in 1279 BC, but became sole ruler of Egypt in 1213 BC.
Ramesses II continued the policies of his father, as well as expanding and improving the military. He was particularly interested in building a canal between the Nile and the Red Sea, which would make it easier for him to send military expeditions further north.
This is especially important because the Egyptians were at war with the Hittites in Asia, so any help they could get would be very helpful.
