The ESTP personality type is the first of the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types to be described in depth, thanks to Carl Jung’s efforts in his self-analysis (1921). Jung was interested in the development of a typology of personality. He felt that personality typing was important for clinical psychology and would help to track the development of a patient’s personality. He also thought it would have important implications for many other areas of psychology, including sociological theory, philosophy, and even art and literature.
According to Myers and Briggs, there are four functions that make up the personality type: sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling. These are then combined into a four-letter combination that describes a particular person’s personality. There are 16 possible combinations of the four functions, each of which describes a different personality. The four-letter combinations are as follows:
ESTJ – extroverted sensing, introverted thinking
ESTP – extroverted sensing, introverted thinking
ESFP – extroverted sensing, extraverted feeling
ENFP – extroverted intuition, introverted feeling
