When I was growing up, my parents and siblings weren’t very interested in what I was interested in. My dad wasn’t a big sports fan and my mom wasn’t a big music fan. They did what they thought was best but they weren’t very encouraging at times and they didn’t tell me I was “good enough” or encourage me to be what I wanted to be.
When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a firefighter, but my parents weren’t very encouraging about that. They ignored the fact that I wanted to be a firefighter until I was about 13 years old, then my mom started telling me I was too old to be a firefighter. She suggested I become a police officer or a detective instead because she thought I was just after a fireman’s job.
My dad didn’t even pay any attention to what I wanted to be until I was around age 15 or 16.
