Simmons was inspired to become an astronaut by the Apollo 11 mission, which landed on the moon. In high school, she was selected for the high school debate team, but her interest in debate was never fulfilled. She then became interested in science and math competitions, but she was never able to participate in them.
Eventually, Simmons ended up studying as a civil engineer. She then went back to school to pursue a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering at Texas A&M University. She was accepted into the NASA Astronaut Candidate Program in 1996, and was assigned to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
It was during her training that Simmons met another astronaut. He was Robert “Hoot” Gibson, a fellow astronaut who had been selected alongside Simmons to join the astronaut corps.
Jean Simmons (January 31, 1929 - January 22, 2010) was an English actress and dancer. Most notable for her work playing leading ladies throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Simmons’ first name role was that of a young Estella Havisham in David Lean’s 1946 production of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations”. Two years later, she would receive critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for her performance as Ophelia in Sir Laurence Olivier’s 1948 adaptation of “Hamlet”. Simmons would only receive one more nomination throughout her career in “The Happy Ending (1970)”.
