When I was around 5 or 6 years old, I started writing stories about superheroes, about how they were going to save the world. (I had no idea what an author was.) As I got older, these stories got more serious, and I started to believe that there really were superheroes out there to save the world. I think that's why I gravitated towards writing fantasy stories.
When I was around 10, I decided that my stories would be about elves and dragons and such.
