The main character of this book is a girl who has moved to New York City with her family. She is going to live with her aunt and uncle who have just bought a house in Brooklyn Heights. Brooklyn Heights is a very old neighborhood and houses are very expensive here. The two main characters are Meg, the narrator, and her younger sister Lulu.
The first few chapters seem to be about Lulu, but as the story progresses both Meg and Lulu are able to become more separated from each other to tell their own stories. Meg is very special in that she is able to see ghosts. She has a connection to ghosts in every way possible. However, she does not know that she can see them until the very end of the story. She can read them using a book called the Mayflower Compact.
This book is full of suspenseful events that happen to Meg and Lulu while they are still living in their old house and waiting for the new house to be built. The house they have been waiting for will be in the area of Brooklyn Heights, but it will not be built until much later.
