Dahl personality type is ESTP, the only one of the six types that is predominantly extraverted. This type has a tendency to be impulsive, spontaneous, and curious, and it is more likely to be a pilot/race car driver than teacher or writer. The name of the type is inspired by the Norwegian author and philosopher Aksel Sandemose.

Dana R. Munro, a Canadian-born writer, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, introduced the term "dahl personality type" in his book "Dahl Type: Energizing the Extraverted Child," published in 1982.

In Munro's system, Extraverted Intuition (Ne) is coupled with Introverted Sensing (Si), and this combination is used to develop a personality profile. The eight types are based on the Jungian model of four functions of the psyche, which Munro says apply to most people but not always to all. The personality type is measured by the relative scores of the four functions on an individual's scales of psychological health.

In Munro's work, Extraverted Intuition (Ne) is combined with Introverted Sensing (Si), and this combination of two polar opposite functions is used to identify a personality type.
