    Durian Sukegawa

    Durian Sukegawa (ドリアン助川 born June 17, 1962) is the artistic name of Tetsuya Sukegawa (助川哲也), who was also known by the name Tetsuya Akikawa (明川 哲也 Akikawa Tetsuya) from 2002 to 2011.

    Sukegawa is a director in the Japan P.E.N. Club and Head of the Children’s Book Committee. A writer, poet, spoken-word performer, singer-songwriter, public speaker, and television and radio personality, he is best known to the West as author of the novel Sweet Bean Paste (Oneworld Publications, Japanese:『あん』An). This novel was made into a film entitled ‘Sweet Bean’, directed by Naomi Kawase, and starring Kirin Kiki and Masatoshi Nagase.

    Sukegawa studied oriental philosophy at Waseda University, before going on to work as a reporter in Berlin and Cambodia in the early 1990s. He has written a number of books and essays, TV programmes and films. He lives in Tokyo.
