Jiří Wolker (Jiří Karel Wolker) was a Czech poet, a member of the Literary Group and Devětsil. He was the most talented representative of proletarian poetry. He was born in 1900 in Prostějov, where he graduated from a grammar school, then studied law at the request of his father (a bank clerk) in Prague, while at the same time attending literary lectures. He was politically active in the Communist Party.
